Superintendent's Update 3.19.20

March 19, 2020

Dear Italy ISD Students and Families,

Italy ISD is enacting a district-wide closure of schools and offices to encourage social distancing measures for the health and safety of our community in response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) through April 3. We have generated distance learning plans for students that begin Monday, March 23, 2020, with activities you will find in this document.

  • Week 1 Overview (March 23 – 27): During the first week, students will follow the learning plans we have provided for all four content areas.

  • Week 2 and beyond overview: Italy ISD's plan will include direct instruction from teachers remotely using Google Classroom or Schoology.

Technology: Devices, Internet Access - What if I don't have access?

  • Please contact your campus administration first for questions. For additional information or questions, please email italyhelpdesk@italyisd.org.

  • TECH SUPPORT: If you are having difficulty with accessing the necessary technology, Italy ISD will have tech support available during regular business hours (8 am - 5 pm). Please email (1) a brief description of the issue and (2) your name and phone number to italyhelpdesk@italyisd.org, and we will try to help you rectify your issue quickly or call your campus administration at 972-483-7411 (Italy High School), 972-483-6342 (Stafford Elementary).

  • If you are unable to access digital learning by 5:00pm March 23, 2020, please email italyhelpdesk@italyisd.org or call 972-483-7411 (Italy High School), 972-483-6342 (Stafford Elementary).  We have alternate plans.

What about grades?

Italy ISD will take grades per local policy guidelines acknowledging the challenges a global pandemic presents. We will still issue progress reports and report cards at this time and those can be accessed on the Italy ISD Parent Portal.

Italy ISD and TEA Parent Portals

  • Italy ISD Parent Portal - Access your child's grades, etc.

  • Texas Education Agency Parent Portal - Although the STAAR test has been canceled for this year, it's a great time to familiarize yourself with these resources. You can use your child's Social Security number and birthdate to obtain the access code to log-in to the system.

Grab and Go Meals-Lunch and the next day’s breakfast will be delivered via drive through at Stafford Elementary starting Monday, March 23 from 11:30am-12:30pm.  We are able to serve ANY student under 18.

We are practicing social distancing.  We will leave the food on a table outside for you to retrieve once we know how many student meals you request.  Plan to shout/signal us how many meals you need or put a sign in the front window.

I am so proud of our staff that has been working around the clock to make this transition as smooth as possible.  Every day I am in contact with TEA, the City of Italy and Ellis County Emergency Management to keep all of us safe.

No one could have predicted that we would experience a global pandemic; I am committed to serve you and our students and know that my prayers go out to those affected financially due to this crisis.  I have been a waitress and worked retail and I know this is devastating. This community is resilient and I urge all of us to assist each other in every way possible.

Gladiator Strong!

Sincerely,

Michelle Schwind, PhD

Italy ISD Superintendent
